LACs with Energy Torpedos

So, myself and Commander Westover were chatting about energy torpedoes and how they would be great on an Light Attack Craft because they could get either up the kilt or down the throat shoots. We would have to come up with a bit more power output for the LAC but I think that it would be a good idea.

Lets see what others think about this.

Not just more power but shift from fission to fusion. It's basically a bleed off of the fusion plasma conduits.

It's probably very sad of me, but when I saw "LACs with energy torpedos", my initial thought was "sharks with fricking lasers?" :D

On a more serious note, I'm not sure I recall any mention of energy torpedos in the Honorverse - is there a method in Honorverse physics to enable them?

Honor uses them to destroy the Sirius in the Basilisk System in the first novel.

They are used intermittently several times after that in subsequent novels - albeit very infrequently - they are unguided shaped plasma weapons used for extreme close quarters combat.

Thank you, Sir!
That scarcity must be why they slipped my memory.

Barring the known power draw back would you think that it would be the best unit to be able to get in close to either the Fore or Aft of a ship to get that kill shot before being wiped out like the old PT Boats of the Second World War?

I think it boils down to the range of the energy torpedo and the amount of damage the weapon inflicts. The ability to cause damage would have to be worth the amount of casualties taken. I suppose this damage to casualty ratio could be influenced by a change in tactics or the development of other weapons as well. If you could mount a grav lance on a small number of LACs to drop an enemy's side walls for example, before the LACs armed with energy torpedoes made their attack runs, the emergency torpedo concept might be more successful. Seeding this LAC strike package with a variant capable of providing missile defense, such as the Grayson katana, could make such an attack even more effective.

The problem with going with ET's is that with Bow and stern walls coming into usage they will become non-viable vs the graser, they are also space intensive as compared to the single graser of the shrike class.

Good point. The larger capital ships that normally use the torpedoes certainly have the space to spare in comparison to a LAC.

Also Capital Ships have the space to incorporate the Grav Lance which can bring down sidewalls which cannot be pentrated by ETs.
