Trouble finding witnesses

For the Marksmanship Awards it is required to have witnesses. The problem I am faced with is although I play a lot of games that are on the lists for marksmanship awards, I seldom if ever, seem to be able to play with TRMN members. How can I get witnesses for these awards if I can't find members to play with me?

In order to even earn the points for the awards and marksman, you need to play with TRMN members, be it online or in person.

They can act as your witness, and you can act as theirs.

Now, if you're playing tabletop with some friends, see if one or two of them would be willing to join. It's free, and they can be involved or as scarce as they want, but at least you'll have some witnesses!

Try to find a common interest/game with other TRMN members. Key is to speak up and ask around. :)

Let me know when you’re on, I’m in both WOWS and WOT, not sure on your server, but I’ll witness for you if I can

So,

Finding other players that are interested in joining the RMN is not always possible. I have asked my regular Infinity/Warhammer/Dropfleet players if they are interested, and they are not. Considering the amount of time I spend on those hobbies, and wanting to become more involved in this one, is there no other response than "they must be TRMN members"?

I'm afraid not, although if I may I'd like to elaborate on that. The purpose of the marksmanship program is to reward people for using gaming as a social activity within TRMN. If you are the only member of TRMN involved, then - unless there's some other link - it's not really anything to do with TRMN. This is analagous to other activities that could be rewarded by TRMN... arranging a coffee morning with your ship or division would be something that could well be appropriate for the org to reward, but going for coffee with your friends wouldn't be.

It's also worth remembering that, as Commander McClure mentioned but did not spell out, you don't have to physically be together - online games like World of Tanks and World of Warships count towards Marksmanship if you have a number of TRMN members playing together, and several games have TRMN clans or the equivalent.

As Lt. Commander Wagstaff- Weston mentions, many or most of the TRMN awards relate to "doing things with or within the organization" or in some way representing the org while doing things. This is pretty standard for organizations. We want to encourage engagement and participation within the group, not just in a specific activity. I understand this could be frustrating to some, but giving an award for something a person does regularly with friends doesn't encourage organizational engagement overall. :-)

As others here have mentioned, there are online opportunities to engage with other members that like to play the games you do. Commander Otahal is an excellent resource. Also, your Fleet Marksmanship representative might be able to help as well.

One of the things I have been working on with Jana and my Bosun as a goal for the Ivanhoe is finding online ways to play games like this for those unable to make local gaming groups. I have found an Infinity module for VASSAL, I know how to get stuff setup to play 40k on TTS (though they might have DMCA'd the stuff), and not have found a workshop file for Dropfleet, but no reviews so no idea how good it is. We also have Battletech, Flames of War, and SITS plans going around. So we have options to play the tabletop games online.

Chief O'Donovan, you also might consider trying new games - there are definitelly ways to play online, depending on what you'd want to try and what you think you could potentially enjoy. Captain Shaffer pointed out some good options already, there also was a post about playing Artemis online, if you fancy a starship bridge simulator.

If you like computer games (or wouldn't mind trying them), it can potentially open new opportunities to play with TRMN members as well, such as Star Trek Online - there are some of us who play or played regularly - seeing your preferences, at least one of them, is in space combat, this might do it for you, at least somewhat.

Lord of the Rings Online group within TRMN has been active, so that's another possibility to go and try, in terms of computer-games, if you'd potentially enjoy fantasy RPG. And really, don't be afraid to join in or ask about the games, just because you've never tried them before.
